The human history of Macau stretches back up to 6,000 years. Fishermen and farmers from mainland China were the first known settlers in Macau, known as the "trading gate" because of its location at the mouth of the Pearl River downstream from Guangzhou (Canton).
Later on, the Portuguese merchant-explorers established a city that within a short time had become a major entrepot for trade between China, Japan, India and Europe. Macau became the perfect crossroad between the East and West cultures.
