LANGUAGE
English is the official language of the Conference.
Simultaneous translation from English to French and French to English will be provided in selected sessions depending on a minimum number of participants.

Prior to booking flights, delegates are strongly advised to check whether they require a Visa to travel to Ethiopia. Information about Visa requirements can be found on the following website:

AIRPORT INFORMATION
Bole International Airport, the busiest airport in East Africa and the hub of Ethiopian Airlines, is serviced by several international airlines with daily flights to Europe, United States, and Asia as well as inter-African destinations.
Access into the terminals is restricted. Anyone at the airport to meet you as well as taxis, will be out in the carpark. A dozen of the top hotels have a booth inside the arrivals area.
* Please Note: The Bole International Airport is just a 10-minute drive away from the Conference Venue, the Hilton Hotel.
 
ARRIVALS FROM THE AIRPORT TO THE CONFERENCE VENUE
There are no bus services from Addis Ababa Bole International Airport to the conference venue and the city centre. Delegates need to arrange a private transfer or catch one of the cream-coloured National Tour Operator taxis.

SHUTTLE TRANSFERS FOR HILTON HOTEL GUESTS
A shuttle service is operating from/to Bole International Airport to Hilton Hotel every hour on the hour.
Participants with a reservation at the Hilton Hotel may request this service at the Hilton desk located in Terminal 2 at the airport. The cost for this shuttle service is $5.00 USD per person one-way.

WEATHER
Addis Ababa maintains pleasant daytime temperatures year-round. In October, the average temperature usually ranges between a high of 67°F (19°C) and low of 54°F (12°C).
Temperatures drop at night, sometimes to almost freezing therefore, at the evening time in Addis, always take a second layer of clothing with you.

ALTITUDE
2324m (7625ft).
Due to the high altitude, it is recommended that travellers to Addis Ababa take more rest, minimize exertion, drink more water, avoid large meals during the first few hours after landing for proper acclimatization.

TRANSPORTATION IN AND AROUND ADDIS ABABA
By Bus
Bus terminals:
Autobus Terra near Mercato. This is the main bus terminal where most of the national buses arrive and depart.
Distance from Mercato the UN Centre: about 5.5km/10 minutes

Ras Mekonin Avenue near the railway station where one can find buses to/from Adama (Nazret), Debre Zeyit, Dire Dawa, Nairobi, Lalibela, Shahemene, Awasa and Bahir Dar are here.

ELECTRICITY
The electrical power in Addis Ababa is 220 volts, 50 Hertz. Three-pin plugs are used.

COMMUNICATION
Telecommunications: The country code for calling Ethiopia is 251.
The city code for Addis Ababa is 011 (or 11 from outside Ethiopia).
Mobile Phones: Ethiopia uses GSM network and operated by the government run mobile phone operator, Ethiopian Telecommunications Corporation (ETC).
Internet Access: Most Hotels will include a business center, where computers will be available and have internet connections (either Ethernet or WiFi), which are reasonably fast and often free for hotel guests. Please check your hotel amenities.
Skype and VoIP service are legal in Ethiopia.
Wireless: 3G Internet services (known as WCDMA or UMTS) are available in many parts of Addis Ababa. At some locations you may have to pay for Wi-Fi connection.

Ethiopian Birr (ETB)

CHANGING MONEY
Please note, you will need to exchange your currency to the Ethiopian Birr (ETB). You may exchange your money for the ETB at most Addis Ababa banks or at specialized stores called Foreign Exchange Bureaus. Look for signs that say Bureau De Change, Geld Wechseln or Cambio.
You may be able to exchange your money at the Addis Ababa airport.

TIPPING
Tourist hotels and restaurants usually add a 10 percent service charge to the bill. Otherwise tipping is fairly common, but only small amounts are customary.
